Principal Investigator

Hilda Mwakatumbula is the Principal Investigator for Fairwork Tanzania. She is a researcher at the REPOA – the number one think-tank in Tanzania. She holds a Ph.D. from Waseda University – Japan, majoring in ICT Economics, Business, and Policy.

Hilda’s research focuses on the intersection of the digital economy, labour markets, and gender. Within this broad frame, she uses empirical evidence methodologies and critical theories to analyse the utilization of digital technologies to attain sustainable development goals specifically on ending poverty of all forms, gender equality, and decent jobs goals.

She has almost ten years of research experience in ICT economics and policy, gained from working on different projects funded by multilateral organizations. She has worked as the digital trade expert for several African countries under UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa). Also, she has published several reports and peer-reviewed articles. Her recent article on digital skills for gig workers was published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – Digital Skills Insight 2020.
