Postdoctoral Researcher

Luke Troynar is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Fairwork, based at the XU Exponential University of Applied Sciences. He conducts digital research within the German team of the Fairwork project with a focus on the effects of algorithmic management on working conditions in the German platform economy.

Before joining the Fairwork project, Luke was working as a Senior Research Assistant for the Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) investigating extant computational methods for moderating harmful humour on social media platforms. He was also working as an academic tutor for the School of Communication at QUT teaching Digital Media Studies.

Luke is an interdisciplinary researcher whose PhD project with the DMRC used a novel combination of computational and social-semiotic methods to study the political ideology of meme subcultures on Reddit with a focus on ambivalent humour. He is interested in innovative approaches to understanding how people today live, work and communicate using digital mediums and platforms and is passionate about fostering equality in digitally mediated spaces. His recent co-publication in Internet Policy Review, Humour as an Online Satey Issue: Exploring Solutions to Help Platofroms Better Address this Form of Expression, led by Ariadna Matamoros-Fernández and Louisa Bartolo, developed novel methods for assessing the social harms of humorous expression online.
